Pilot Rejects Violin

On April 17 internationally acclaimed violinist and Local 20-208 (Chicago, IL) member Rachel Barton Pine was denied boarding with her violin—a 1742 Joseph Guarneri “del Gesu” violin. The instrument, insured for $20 million, is on lifetime loan from an anonymous benefactor. Pine was the first person down the jetway to her American Airlines flight, and her only other carry-on was her purse. It was the pilot who eyed her violin and stated he would not allow it on his plane. She tried to explain that it would fit (as it had many times before) in the overhead compartment and tried to restate American Airline’s own policy, in line with the FAA Modernization and Reform Act.

The pilot simply stated: “It is not going on because I say so.” Pine was forced to take another flight in the morning where her violin was easily accommodated in the overhead compartment.

U.K. : Pro-Brexit festival gets a new line-up [updated] | IQ Magazine

Update: In the space of 24 hours, Alesha Dixon, Sister Sledge, 5ive and East 17 have all pulled out.
Dixon’s management says “Alesha has no political allegiances either way on this issue”, while a statement from 5ive reads: “When Rich and Scott agreed to play the event they understood that it was a pop concert funded by one of the Brexit organisations and not a political rally.
“As it has come to light that this is more a political rally with entertainment included they have both decided to cancel their involvement. They would like to make it clear that as a band 5ive have no political allegiances or opinions for either side. Their allegiance is first and foremost to their fans.”

European Commission wants Netflix to carry at least 20% European content

The EU executive will propose a quota requiring online video streaming services to offer at least 20% European content.

A leaked proposal obtained by EurActiv.com will revise the six-year-old audiovisual media services directive and apply laws that currently apply to television to online streaming services like Netflix.

Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip and Commissioner Günther Oettinger are slated to reveal the changes to the directive next Wednesday (25 May), along with a slew of other digital policy proposals on e-commerce and geoblocking.

The document claims to create “a more level playing field in the promotion of European works by obliging on-demand services to reserve at least 20% share for European works in their catalogues and to ensure adequate prominence of such works”.

Under the changed directive, EU countries can also force streaming services to put money into producing European television shows or movies.
