Kobalt’s AMRA increases YouTube publishing payouts by 34% in EU

Until AMRA took over last year, Kobalt’s collection responsibility in Europe fell to its partnership with Swedish CMO STIM – a venture which, after it was struck in 2013, resulted in its own significant uplift in collections.

Tomas Ericsson, CEO of AMRA said, “This uplift is exceptional both because it’s in Europe, one of the most mature markets in the world, and because it’s in addition to the already significant uplift from Kobalt’s previous partnership with STIM.

“To deliver a combined 28% uplift from Spotify and YouTube on top of what Kobalt has already achieved with STIM, is truly an amazing result. As well as a strong indicator of the tremendous uplift to come from the other major DSP’s and other markets around the world.”

A new Vevo job ad spotted by MBW for a Head of Creative Commissioning & Acquisitions in New York gives us some clues about how the music video company is set to move far beyond standard promo media.

The role will see the successful candidate green-light, license or acquire programmes that fit with Vevo’s future direction.

In particular: “Diversifying Vevo’s content offer beyond the official music video into long form programming.”

Medianet, SOCAN, YouTube And The Kobalt Effect

Since the demise of the long-running-but-never-launched Global Repertoire Database (GRD) there has been a lot of debate over what comes next for digital rights reporting. The songwriter class action suits in the US against Spotify are the natural outcome of more than one and a half decades of failing to deal with the forsaken mess that is compositional rights in the digital era. The music industry needs a solution and now just like busses that never come, two arrive at once: Google’s Open Source Validation Tool for DDEX Standard (doesn’t sound too sexy I know, but bear with me on this one) and Canadian PRO (Performing Rights Organization) SOCAN has acquired Medianet essentially as a digital rights reporting play. Afrique du Sud : la SABC va désormais diffuser 90% de musique locale sur ses 18 chaînes de radio

En Afrique du Sud, les 18 chaînes de radio de la SABC vont désormais consacrer 90% de leur programmation musicale aux productions locales. La décision prise par le groupe audiovisuel public sera effective dès le 18 mai 2016. La SABC donne ainsi la priorité aux contenus locaux qui reflètent la diversité culturelle de l’Afrique du Sud.

Canada: résultats des 1er Live Music Awards

Le Festival d’été de Québec a été décoré samedi à Toronto, lors des premiers Live Music Industry Awards, remportant le prix du Meilleur festival à but non lucratif de l’année au Canada. Il a été préféré au Festival Luminato (Toronto), au City Folk (Ottawa), au Festival de jazz de Vancouver et au Festival folk de Calgary. Osheaga a été proclamé Festival de l’année, prix pour lequel étaient aussi candidates les organisations suivantes: Boots & Hearts (Oro Medonte), RBC Bluesfest (Ottawa), Squamish Valley Music Festival et Wayhome Music and Arts Festival (Oro Medonte). Montréal a remporté le titre de Ville musicale de l’année devant Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto et Vancouver.

Règlement Concours Circuit Alternatif 2016

Depuis 2014, le Concours Circuit a laissé tomber l’appellation Pop Rock pour s’ouvrir davantage aux musiques actuelles alternatives : pop, rock, folk, indé, garage, psyché, post rock, math rock, noise, experimental, slowcore, shoegaze, synthpop, lo-fi, hip hop…

SOCAN predicts dramatic YouTube revenue uplift as it acquires Medianet 

Canada-based collection society SOCAN has acquired B2B music tech provider Medianet – in a bid to ‘ensure that creators and music publishers, including artists and all relevant rights owners, are properly compensated for their work’.

Seattle-based MediaNet has previously powered services including Beats Music, CÜR Music and Songza and boasts a database of more than 51 million recordings – each containing a unique audio identifier with robust master rights information.

SOCAN says the buyout will make it ‘the leader in accurate matching of music data’ and ‘will especially increase revenue streams for all whose music is played on digital platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, SoundCloud and other services relying on uploads’.

Belgium blocks ticket resale sites

A Belgian judge has ordered the country’s internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to three secondary ticket outlets in response to widespread fraud by resellers.
Touts used Topticketshop, Rang1Tickets.nl and Tickets België to sell €400,000 worth of fraudulent tickets to concerts by artists including Adele and girl band K3 which were duplicated on a number of other, primarily Dutch, websites. Consumer affairs minister Kris Peeters (pictured), who led the investigation, says the deception was “striking and undeniable”.
